At SEDA Dental, our dental team is experienced in crown lengthening to improve the overall look and health of your smile. Crown lengthening can be a confusing term to some since it sounds like it involves adding material to the tooth. A more accurate term might be crown exposure since gum tissue is excised to reveal more of the tooth. You may consider crown lengthening for cosmetic reasons if you want to fix a "gummy" smile. It could also be needed if not enough of your enamel is visible to support a filling, crown, or other restoration. To learn more, schedule a consultation at SEDA Dental in Boynton Beach, FL.

Ideal candidates for crown lengthening should be in good general health, especially when it comes to the gums. Issues, like periodontal (gum) disease, may need to be treated before crown lengthening is performed. Most often, crown lengthening is requested for cosmetic reasons to correct a "gummy" smile. In these instances, excess gum tissue may be removed to improve the ratio of gum tissue to enamel and offer you an even gumline. For other patients, crown lengthening can also be needed to perform a restoration. More of the tooth may need to revealed to be able to place a crown, bridge, or filling.
What To Expect
Before the crown lengthening procedure, a numbing agent is used on the needed areas to reduce pain and discomfort. You may discuss other sedation methods at your consultation to help keep you calm and comfortable during the treatment. When your mouth is prepared, your gum tissue will be cut away to gradually reveal more of the teeth, and the gumline will be shaped for an even look. As soon as the crown lengthening treatment is complete, the soft gum tissue will be stitched to stop bleeding, and your mouth will be cleaned.
After your crown lengthening procedure, your mouth may be sore and swollen. Nonprescription pain relievers and cold compresses can usually be used to reduce your discomfort, but we may prescribe pain medication and/or antibiotics. It may be helpful to stick to a liquid or soft food diet for a few days as your gums recover. You should clean your mouth with mouthwash and use soft brushing techniques, but avoid flossing. In some cases, you may need to have a follow-up appointment at SEDA Dental to monitor your healing. We will also continuously check your oral health, including your gums, at your annual dental exam.
The cost of a crown lengthening procedure may vary, depending on why the treatment is being performed. Dental insurance providers may cover a portion of the cost in some circumstances, but they may not. In any event, our financial team will contact your provider to determine what your out-of-pocket costs will be before discussing your options for payment. If you don't have dental insurance, our financial team will help to estimate your costs at your consultation and give you more information on medical financing that may help make your dental treatments more affordable.
