The strength of your jawbone is key to your general dental health. If your jawbone is weak from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may require a bone graft so the jaw can securely hold both your natural teeth and dental implants. Bone grafting, also known as osseous surgery, helps to strengthen and rebuild your jawbone until it is healthy enough to support a dental implant. At SEDA Dental, this surgery is used to prepare your mouth for subsequent dental implant surgery to replace weak or missing teeth. Plan a consultation at our office in Boynton Beach, FL to learn more about bone graft surgery.
You may have a weak jawbone if you have certain oral conditions, like gum disease, or if you experienced a physical trauma to your face. Atrophy in the jawbone can happen if a tooth was missing, and it was either untreated or replaced with removable dentures or a cemented bridge. Bone graft surgery rebuilds the jaw so it can support a dental implant; however, you will need to be patient with the process. Some procedures can take months to complete, but you will have a stronger jaw that will be able to support dental implants and your natural teeth for better oral health.
What To Expect
The steps of your bone graft procedure will vary based on where the graft comes from and the amount of grafting needed. The donor bone may be removed from another bone in your body, such as the chin, hip, or lower leg, which is an autograft. This may be completed in our office with local anesthesia and sedation, or in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Other graft sources include an allograft that takes the bone graft from another person. A xenograft bone graft is taken from an animal, generally a cow. Another option is a synthetic bone graft known as an alloplast. During your consultation, we will explain your grafting options and help you decide on the best plan for your needs.
As soon as the bone graft is ready to be placed, we will use local anesthesia to numb the needed areas and make an incision in the gums to reach the jawbone. The graft will be attached to the bone, plus collagen and proteins that encourage bone growth. The gums will be stitched closed, and the area will be cleaned.
Over the next nine months, the graft will heal with your jawbone (osseointegration). During this time, it is crucial to have a regular home oral care routine with brushing and flossing along with any products recommended by our team. They may prescribe antibiotics or pain medication for any discomfort and inflammation after the procedure. You may have additional appointments at SEDA Dental to check your healing and to determine when your mouth is ready for dental implants.
We will contact your dental insurance to figure out your coverage and personal responsibilities, but if bone grafting is deemed medically necessary, some of the expenses for the procedure are usually covered. During your consultation, our team can create a cost estimate, whether you have insurance or not, and go over payment methods, including medical financing.
